You should know your skin and hair well, and understand what specific needs your body has for the products you use. In this article, we will help you identify your skin's needs and show why our herbal body butter is better than whatever you are currently using!

What Skin Type Do You Have & What Does Your Skin NEED?

There are a lot of different skin types in the world, but there are some general categories that you can fit yourself into in order to help identify how to best care for your skin. These are oily, acne-prone, dry, sensitive, and combination. And while many products claim to cater to a specific skin type, it is important you understand what your skin really needs so you can check the ingredients for yourself.

OILY SKIN

Oily skin occurs when your body naturally secretes excessive amounts of sebum from your pores. This can happen regularly or for some people, seasonally. Excessive sebum clogs your pores and can cause breakouts. It is also more difficult for people who wear makeup and can experience runny makeup from over-oily skin.

In the past, oil-free products were popular because people believed that it was best to remove all oil from the skin. However, oil has nutritious characteristics, and people with oily skin know that attempting to remove all oil and not replacing it with anything will just make it come back stronger.

What we know now is that it is best to wash your face to clean off the dirt and keep your pores free and then apply good oils that your skin will love. For oily skin types, this means products with Non-Comedogenic Ingredients.

The Comedogenic Scale is a rating system for oils, butters, and other ingredients to estimate how likely they are to clog your pores based on their chemical makeup. The scale goes from 0-5, where a 0 is for ingredients that absolutely do not clog pores, and a 5 is for ingredients very likely to clog pores.

If you have oily skin, you should always strive to use products that have, at most, a 2 rating. In a future post, we will provide a list of our ingredients and their ratings, but rest assured that the quality ingredients used in our herbal body butter are perfect for oily skin types thanks to their low comedogenic ratings!

ACNE-PRONE SKIN

Acne-prone skin is generally a result of excessively oily skin, but it can also be more complex than just clogged pores. There are different types of acne, but focusing on non-comedogenic products can help control breakouts.

It is also helpful to aim to use products with antibacterial and antiseptic properties, as these help clean your pores out and treat the bacteria that cause pimples. Some great ingredients for cleansing the pores include geranium essential oils, lemongrass essential oils, kokum butter, and rosemary, as they are all naturally antibacterial. All of these quality ingredients are included in our Herbal Body Butter - and more!

It is also helpful to use ingredients that are naturally anti-inflammatory, as this helps reduce the inflammation caused by clogged pores and swollen pimples. Calendula and green tea are two great products that help soothe inflamed skin. You can bet these ingredients are also in our herbal hair and body butter!

Since my adolescence, I've struggled with oily and acne-prone skin. Up until I developed this herbal body butter and began using it regularly, I dealt with constant breakouts. However, my skin now has done a full 180, and I have clearer and cleaner skin than ever before, all thanks to this herbal body butter!

Left (after): My skin now is clear of acne, smooth, and vibrant.

Right (before): No matter what I used, (alcohol, lemon juice, face masks, acne products...) my face was still oily and my pores were still clogged. I struggled with constant breakouts, but not any more thanks to Tonic Essentials Herbal Body Butter!

DRY SKIN

Dry skin is in need of more hydration and moisture, as this skin type does not naturally secrete enough sebum to keep the skin healthy and lubricated. This skin type can be very uncomfortable, as your skin can get chapped and cracked. Having excessively dry skin causes wrinkles earlier, and it can cause dry patches like eczema and other skin ailments.

Dry skin requires products that have oleic acid, as the Vitamin K in it helps to restore skin elasticity, improve skin texture, and reduce wrinkles. Dry skin can also use oils and butters that have higher comedogenic ratings, up to 5. Murumuru butter and cocoa butter are two nourishing butters that have comedogenic ratings of 2 and 4 respectively. Both are full of oleic acid, help provide long-term moisture for dry skin, and of course, are included in our Herbal Body Butter.

SENSITIVE SKIN

Sensitive skin is very tricky and can be unique to treat. People with sensitive skin can have different triggers that cause redness, flakiness, itching, rashes, and more. People with sensitive skin should patch test the products they purchase before using them on large areas of skin. This allows them to double-check that it will not cause a problem for them specifically, even if it claims to treat sensitive skin. If you have sensitive skin, you should make a list of the ingredients that trigger sensitivity and reactions, and reach for simple products with fewer ingredients.

Figuring out what products your skin specifically reacts to is hard, but here is a place to start. Certain essential oils, like coconut oils and oils from nuts, can be reactive. Certain extracts, fragrances, dyes, and other unnatural products can cause breakouts.

Tonic Essentials Herbal Body Butter does contain natural fragrance oils, essential oils, and butters and oils extracted from nuts, so please patch test the product before using.

COMBINATION SKIN

Combination skin comes in all different forms. It can be dry but oily, normal oily or normal dry, sensitive and oily, and more. The most common form of combination skin is oily and dry, and it can be very difficult to deal with. If your skin is dry and oily, you need to find a product that controls the oil and moisturizes the dry parts all in one.

Some people may even choose to use two different products for the different zones of their skin. It can take some trial and error to figure out what is the best method for you, but starting with a well-rounded product like our Herbal Body Butter can help you find a good solution sooner.

Conclusion

The Herbal Body Butter by Tonic Essentials is a well-rounded product available for use by all skin types. People with sensitive skin should test before using regularly to ensure that none of the ingredients is a trigger for your particular skin. But for other skin types, we know that this product is sure to please.

The ingredients in our Herbal Body Butter were carefully selected one by one and measured for their optimal benefits to all skin types simultaneously. The Herbal Body Butter is a value-packed product with vitamins and nutrients that are beneficial for all skin types and hair types. It is an all-purpose product that can be used from head to toe, literally. So head over to our shop and check some out for yourself!
